A RESOLUTION

establishing a Mayor’s Task Force on Bicentennial Celebration Planning.

WHEREAS, in 1818 a group of settlers incorporated under the Smithton Land Company purchased over 2,000 acres and established the village of Smithton less than one mile from current day downtown Columbia; and

WHEREAS, in 1821 the settlers moved because of lack of water across the Flat Branch to the plateau between the Flat Branch Creek and Hinkson Creek in what is now the downtown district and renamed the settlement Columbia; and

WHEREAS, in 1917 The Daniel Boone Hotel and Tavern opened and was considered the best hotel between Kansas City and St. Louis at the time; and

WHEREAS, the Columbia City Council approved the purchase of the property at 32 S. Providence Road for future improvements which may include the expansion of Flat Branch Park, public transportation and streetscape improvements, and the construction of the Columbia West Gateway Plaza as part of the CID’s Gateways project; and

WHEREAS, the project has a working name of Founder’s Park as the City of Columbia originated in this area and expanded out to the current boundaries; and

WHEREAS, the City Council desires to establish a Mayor’s Task Force on Bicentennial Celebration Planning to work towards the goal of planning citywide events to be held in 2018 and 2021 to celebrate and commemorate the 100th and 200th anniversaries of the City of Columbia, the village of Smithton and The Daniel Boone Tavern and Hotel, and the creation of Founder’s Park, through opportunities within the city, using both historical and educational events to honor Columbia’s rich history; and

WHEREAS, the Mayor’s Task Force on Bicentennial Celebration Planning will engage the community in planning for the celebrations.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBIA, MISSOURI, AS FOLLOWS:

SECTION 1.

There is hereby established the Mayor’s Task Force on Bicentennial Celebration Planning. Its purposes include the following:

  • Planning citywide events to be held in 2018 and 2021 that are historical, educational and honor Columbia’s rich history, to celebrate and commemorate the 100th and

200th anniversaries of the City of Columbia, the village of Smithton and The Daniel Boone Tavern and Hotel, and the creation of Founder’s Park.

  • Coordinating, budgeting, organizing sponsorship, and marketing events that celebrate the 100th and 200th anniversaries of the City of Columbia, the village of Smithton and The Daniel Boone Tavern and Hotel and the creation of Founder’s Park.
  • Engaging the community in planning for the celebrations and events.

SECTION 2.

The Task Force shall consist of nine (9) members appointed by the Mayor. Two (2) members shall be representatives of the Downtown Community Improvement District. The remaining members shall be Columbia residents, business owners or individuals from surrounding areas suited to participate on the Task Force. Task Force members shall receive no compensation for their service.

SECTION 3.

The Task Force shall be dissolved after the bicentennial celebrations have ended or by December 31, 2021, whichever occurs first.
